The Clay House

A place for creation and education of the ceramic arts.

Saint Thomas Aquinas (c. 1225 – 1274) defined ‘human’ as “a being with brains and hands. As such our greatest joy comes when we can employ both simultaneously in ways which are creative, useful, and productive.”

Fleur Schell has been working as a clay artist for nearly 20 years and firmly believes in the enormous benefits of teaching life skills through clay. She is as passionate about sharing the knowledge she has about clay as she is about making with clay in her studio. Through the sharing of clay knowledge Fleur has been introduced to people and places around the world that have profoundly enriched her life and the lives of her family. “I am grateful to work with a material that has allowed me to embrace the philosophy – it’s a new environment that makes life interesting but it’s the people we meet along the way that give life meaning”.

Fleur has two young children who are the greatest motivation for her to invest so much time in founding a specialist clay centre. Fleur is constantly engaged in seeking ways of exposing her children to a variety of tactile experiences to learn about the complexity and richness of information the world has to offer.
